Thanks to the staff there for hosting this event. In the assisted bench press competition it was Darrell Huskey for the win at wheel chair 220, breaking his own Tennessee state record by five pounds to finish with 280. Three hundred is just around the corner! Denise Timbs, state record-holder in the open women's 148 class, broke the record there with a strong 230. A fourth with 240 came within inches of locking out as well! Our only teenager, Cody Self, won at 16-17/198 with 275. For the submaster division it was Glen Powers at 220 with 405 while David Creasy finished with 425 @ 242. Up next was the best of the best in the state of Tennessee, Harley Timbs! Weighing in at 270 and lifting in the 275 class, Harley finished the day with an amazing 750! No question here, a good call at the chest, a solid press to lockout, a great lift! Not only a new state and personal record, but the best lifter as well! At 40-44 it was Jeff West with 405 for the win and the great Jeff Weaver with 630 for the title at 275. Marty Akins won at 45-49/242 with 365, just missing a final state record attempt with 485. Brother Eddie Akins did break his own state record at 50-54/242, finishing with 405. Charles Green broke his Tennessee state record at 65-69/220 with a new personal best 340! Our final assisted lifter was 242 open winner, Jeremy Buttrey, who finished with his opener of 425. For the raw division it was Fannie Taylor for the win at 55-59/148, finishing with a great 185! By far, one of the best raw lady master benchers in the country! At novice shw it was first-time competitor Geraud Kelly with a new state record of 360. Mark Billman, also lifting for the first time, set the state record at 13-15/114 with 125. Adam Powers won at 165 with 150 while Michael Fox broke the state record at 181 with 265, making just his opening lift. Brandon Plunk, a young lifter with lots of potential, broke the state record at 16-17/220 with 285. Taking the win at 18-19/198 was Will Davis who finished with 275. Chris Franklin won at junior 220 with 275. For the master men's 40-44 age group it was Michael Bright with 365, breaking his own state record by fifteen pounds! Trey Neely finished the day tying the state record at 242 with 365. Joe Coll continues to get stronger with age, as he breaks again the state record at 50-54/198 with his 340 final attempt. Dale Radford also did well, breaking the raw state record at 70-74/198 with a solid 220. In the open division it was Tintsey Coats for the win at 148 with 325. Weighing in at just 145, Tintsey also won the best lifter award for the raw lifters as well. Our final bencher was John Miller who won at 165 with 285. Moving to the deadlift competition, newcomer Sarah Franks set the state record for the 13-15/148 class with a new personal best 260! Michael Fox won his second title of the day with his second state record by finishing with 370 @ 13-15/181. Brandon Plunk got his second state record of the day at 16-17/220 with a great 425 final pull! Both Michael and Brandon played in high school football games the night before, so by the time the competition was over they were two tired little boys! Winning his first ever best lifter award was 18-19/220 winner Chris Franklin. Chris finished with a personal best 525. Marty Akins won at 45-49/242 with 520, just missing a final attempt with a state record 540. Eddie Akins rounded out the pullers with a new state record of 505 for the win at 50-54/242. In the curl event it was Michael Fox with 110 @ 13-15/181 and Eddie Akins with 150 @ 50-54/242. Both were new Tennessee state records for their respective classes. Thanks to Glen Powers for helping to promote this event, to our two spotters and loaders, Billy Cupples and Jamie Sipes, and to Dana Fox for serving as out trophy girl. See you all again next year! Thanks to owner Jim Parham for once again hosting this event. In the raw bench press division it was first-time competitor Dennis Cornelius for the win at novice 242. A lifter who trains at home, Dennis finished with a great 500 state record which also gave him the best lifter award for the raw lifters! Also at novice was 275 winner Jeff Ribbons, who broke the state record there with 255. Deven Hawkins, sporting a cast on his right foot, a broken foot from football, came through with a new state record at 13-15/132 with 170. Darrell Barfield, who continues to improve with each new competition, got a new pr and state record at submaster 181 with his 315 final attempt. At master 40-44/220 Gary McCloud won, making just his opener of 345. For the 50-54 age division John Alaniz won at 242 with a strong 390. Mark Facey set the record at police & fire/45-49/181 with 315, just missing a third with 325. In the open classes it was another first time competitor, Dustin Kirby, who finished at 242 with 290. Todd Robinson broke the state record at 275 with a strong 475. Moving to the assisted division, it was state record-holder Lacee Sanchez moving up to the 16-17 age group, setting the state record at 123 with 155. Cyndi Crossland broke the state record at 45-49/165 with an easy 275, as she moves down to that class. K. W. Stanley, a great young lifter with a lot of potential, broke the state record at novice 198 with 405, which I made him take over, to correct some of the form problems he was having. This kid had lost fifteen pounds in bodyweight recently, was lifting with a loose shirt, and still put about fifty pounds on his bench in the last few months. Newcomer Adam Carey won at novice 308 with 430. For the master men's 40-44 age group Chris Chenoweth had a great day, breaking his own state record at 165 with 340. Sammy Smith, who was a little off on this day, won at 198 with 435, where he holds the state record with 480. Roger Rodich moved down to the 181 class where he broke the existing state record by fifty-five pounds, finishing with 330. In the open division we had some what of an oddity, where two of our strongest lifters failed to get in their openers. David Willis failed with 675 @ 242 and Donnie Gragg bowed out at 275 with his attempt at 630. Both of these lifters are dangerously close to 700, but just couldn't quite pull it together on this day. That left Luke Ellsworth, who is always an impressive lifter, winning the best lifter award after making his 550 opener at 198. Luke, who definitely had 600 within his grasp, failed with 585 twice. Taking the win at 275 was Steven Trotman, who finished with 550. Steve's lifting is doubly impressive, since he has been able to maintain his strength after losing nearly seventy-five pounds in the past few years. In the deadlift event it was Dennis Cornelius for the win at novice 242, pulling an impressive state record of 655! Chris Chenoweth finished up his best day ever by pulling a personal best 435 @ 40-44/165. Steven Trotman pulled a strong 550 @ open 275, just ten pounds shy of the state record of 560. Thanks to our spotters/loaders Tyler Kuoke and D. Smith, who did a great job, and to Terry Putman, who furnished his Forza Bench and Texas Power Bar for the meet. A big thanks also to Regina Johnson, who took some great pictures of the competition. And always a big thank you to my Oklahoma buddies, Jim Parham,Tom Barth and Cyndi Crossland who always helps with the meets in so many ways. See you all again next year! Dr. Darrell Latch

Thanks to Jose Mireles and Nathan Barre for doing a great job setting up the platform and loading and spotting. We had a good meet with lifters from Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. A special thanks to everyone who helped with this competition, my wife Susie and daughter Christine, who judged, my son Joey, Adam Fancher and Jesse Stanton, who did a great job loading and spotting, and to Darrell Kibler, who assisted the lifters and shot the video for the meet. And to Big Joe and others who helped out when we needed a hand spotting, thank you all. In the full meet event we saw the return of the Frantz Power Team, headed by the legendary Ernie Frantz. First up, Kristin Vaziri again won at women's junior 132 with all new personal and ANPPC national records, finishing with a 320 squat, followed by a 135 bench and a 250 pull for a great 705 total! Our only other lady lifter was 'E' Girl Reeves, who failed with her 420 opening squat and bowed out of the competition. For the teenage division, fifteen year old Parker Shields set all new national raw records for the 13-15/165 class with a 285 squat, 195 bench and 400 pull for an 880 total. Training partner Chase Karnes did the same at junior 198 with his 450 squat, 350 bench and 520 deadlift, finishing with a 1320 total! Barzeen Vaziri broke all of his previous national records at junior 308, finishing with a great 1980 total. Barzeen's 810 squat, 545 bench and 625 deadlift made up his personal best total. At submaster it was the great Joe Carter. Joe got a strong 910 squat, but was called on depth, then finished with his 840 second attempt. A personal best 575 bench and a 725 deadlift gave Joe a 2140 total. Joe won not only the submaster and open 275 class, but also took the best lifter award for the powerlifting event. For the master's division it was Steve Beccue, who had a great day of lifting, finishing with a 1440 total, by way of a 500 squat, a pr 380 bench and a 560 pull, to take the honors at 40-44/220. At 45-49 it was Manuel Rivera for the win at 181. Manny finished with a 575 squat, got a great national record 420 bench and tied the deadlift mark with 530 for a great record-breaking 1520 total. At 198 Tom Carnaghi had some problems with his squat, failing with 750 three times, but he did finish the competition, hitting a 420 bench and a 565 deadlift for a 985 total. Tom also competed in the open 198 class. Up next was 275 champion Mike Goldman. Mike had a good day, upping his total by 100 pounds from the World Cup in July. Mike finished with a strong 800 squat, which tied the mark set by the great Joe White (the first person to attempt a 1000 squat). That was followed by a 500 bench and a 650 national record deadlift to give Mike at 1950 national record total. At 50-54 it was John Dougherty who went 500-350-530-1380 at 198. John's 530 deadlift matched the national record set by Dave Newman two years ago. It was great seeing Bernie Ferro again, who won at 220. Bernie finished with a 510 squat, followed by a 365 bench and a strong 600 pull for a 1380 total. Our prayers are with Bernie, who, for the past few years has been caring for his aged father. Marty Caliendo dropped down to the 165 class of the 55-59 age division, setting all new national records there! Marty finished with a 500 squat, followed by a 380 bench and a 470 deadlift to create his 1350 total. Also at 55-59 was John Magee, who failed with his 640 opening squat after tweaking his back. Everyone was sorry to not see John lift, who has the greatest squat in the history of the ANPPC (900 at open/shw), though it was great to see John again. Up next was the living legend himself, Ernie Frantz. Ernie upped his ANPPC national records in the squat (575), deadlift (470) and total (1100) at 70-74/198! Still amazing at 74 years of age! (It's always an honor having Ernie present, let along lifting! Many of the young lifters don't even know who Ernie Frantz is! Here is one of the true grandfathers of the sport of powerlifting, a person who was the first to design all of the lifting gears used today, as well as the inventor of the monolift, the power rack and the hyperextension, just to name a few. Ernie is also the founder of the APF, at one time the strongest powerlifting organization in the world. Now, that's someone these younger lifters need to be listening to!) For the open division Justin Stratton came up from Poplar Bluff, Missouri to take the 148 class. Hitting an easy 550 squat and just missing 600, Justin broke the national record in the bench with 360. A strong 540 pull gave him a great 1450 national record total. At 165 it was Louis Ruiz, lifting in his first meet ever! Louis did well, going 465-245-430-1140. Moving up to the 181 class, Phil Halverson had his best day ever on the platform. With personal records in the squat (480), bench (380) and total (1310), Phil has improved his lifts nearly 100 pounds from a year ago. (Phil actually locked out 400 on a fourth attempt on the bench, but was called for slight up and down movement of the bar. ) At 220 Steve Wagner got a big 750 squat along with a strong 540 bench, which actually tied the national record there. His 550 deadlift gave him a great 1840 total. Moving to the bench press event our only teenager, Joe Johannes, won at 18-19/181 with a new ANPPC national record of 375. Also garnering a national record was Terry Cox who won at 40-44/308 with 365. Gene Bauer won at 45-49/ 220 with his 435 national mark, which also gave him the best lifter award as well for the bench competition. Floyd Ouderkirk got a new personal best and national record at 60-64/198 with his 360 final attempt. Stronger than ever, Floyd just turned 60 years of age. Wayne Williams, all the way from Arkansas, broke the Arkansas state raw record at 65-69/198 with 195. Our final bencher, also from Arkansas was Harold Hager, who set the national mark at 75-79/165 with 210. Once it was known that Harold was back in town, Tuscola went on Red Alert, and all women of age were locked away safely in their homes! Thanks again to everyone who helped to make this competition a fun and successful event. See you all again next year! Dr. Darrell Latch
