The Muddy River Open Bench Press/Deadlift Classic was held May 3, 2008 at French Riviera Spa in Hickory Hills, Tennessee. Thanks once again to the staff at the health club for hosting this competition.                                                                                                 In the raw bench press event novice 220 winner Chris Franklin broke the existing Tennessee state record by five pounds with his 290 final attempt.  At 40-44/220 it was first-time competitor Trey Neely with a new state record of 315.  For the 50-54/220 class it was state record-holder Joe Coll for the win, finishing with 355, nursing a shoulder injury.  At open shw it was ever-consistent Nekia Slater who finished with a strong 405.    Our lone puller was novice 220 winner Chris Franklin who only got in his opener of 460.  Wanting badly the state record at 505, Chris has plenty of potential, this being just his second competition ever.                                                                                           In the curl competition Russell Messner, another first-timer, won at novice, submaster and open 220 with his final attempt of 110. Russell's lift at submaster set the state record there.  Our other curler was Robert Gray who won at novice, 40-44 and open 242, setting all new state records for each class with his 165 final attempt.                                                                                                      Thanks to Marty Shettlesworth and Ryan Acuff for helping with the loading and spotting efforts.  See you all again December 6 for the SLP Christmas For Kids Bench Press/Deadlift Championship.                                                                                          Dr. Darrell Latch
