Thanks to owner Phillip King for hosting this event. This was the first Son Light Power competition to be held in the state of Mississippi, so all of the lifters established new state records in their individual classes. In the raw bench press competition it was Dustin Parks for the win at 16-17/132, finishing with a strong 190. Joseph Jones won at junior/242 with our biggest lift of the day, 365. This was Joseph's first competition. Shane "Subway Shane" Barnes, also competing for the first time, won at submaster/242 with 350! Rob Gipson took the 40-44/275 class with 340. Our final raw lifter matched the biggest lift of the day with his 365 final attempt @ 55-59/308. Kevin Thomas, our oldest competitor was lifting for the first time. For the deadlift event Dustin Parks showed lots of back strength with his 365 pull @ 16-17/132. Kirk Gibson won again at 16-17/220 with a personal best 410. Our final deadlifter was Tony Gray, who won again at 40-44/181 with a strong 450. Well, it was a small turnout, but hey, the Memphis and Southern Tennessee, Northern Mississippi area got up to sixteen inches of snow the day before but we still have a good time. Hope to be back again soon. Thanks to Phillip and the other Gym 24:20 members who helped with the loading and spotting duties, and a special thanks to Sandy Gibson who took some great pictures of the meet and also served as our trophy girl. Our only lady lifter was one of the top raw master lifters in the country, Dian Covington. Dian finished with a strong national record of 175, taking the title at 45-49/181. In the novice men's division it was Chris Creasbaum for the win at 220 with 400. This represented new SLP state records for both Illinois and Indiana. Dan Burns took the 242 class with a solid 345. At 13-15/123 it was first-time competitor Taylor Ramey with 95. Taylor posted new raw state records for Illinois, as well as his home state of Missouri. Taylor's brother, Cory Williams, won at 18-19/148 with 165, setting a new state record for Missouri in the process. Cody Brant set a new national and Illinois state record for the 18-19/308 class with 405. At junior 275 it was Mitch Davis with 375. Jim is healed now from some previous injuries and looked strong, finishing with a new Missouri state raw record of 380 @ 55-59/242. Another old friend was Al Kennedy, who is just beginning to compete again. Al had a great day, breaking the Illinois state and USA national marks at police & fire/50-54/220 with a strong 375! Al also received the best lifter award for the master men. In the open division Chris Creasbaum won at 220 with 400, his second title of the day. Then at 308 we had our only tough competition, between W. T. Franklin and Zach Butkus. When the dust had settled it was Zach over W. T. 500 to 465. Zach also received the best lifter trophy for the USA Raw Nationals, as did Dian Covington for the ladies. Moving to the SLP Illinois Open, our only bencher was Terry Cox, who as mentioned earlier broke the state record at 40-44/308 with 400. In the deadlift event first-time lifter Lakshmi Lancaster matched her personal best 175 with her win at novice women/148. Training partner Dian Covington matched her own state record at 45-49/181 with a strong 360 pull! Dan Burns won his second title of the day at novice 242 with 400. Two of our teenagers, brothers Taylor Ramey and Cory Williams, also pulled for the first time. Taylor finished with 205 @ 13-15/123 while Cory won at 18-19/148 with 300. Both new personal records at well! Our best lifter in the deadlift competition was Mitch Davis, who finished with a new personal best 560 @ junior 275. Taking his second title of the day at 45-49/220 was Dave Leslie, who finished with 430. Thanks again to all the competitors and the lifters who always makes these competitions fun. See you all again for our next meet here at the gym, when we will host the SLP National Bench Press/Deadlift Championships. Dr. Darrell Latch

Fitness in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Thanks to the efforts of Arnold Weaver and Harley Timbs for promoting this event and to fitness owner Joey Perry for hosting this event. Well, we had a pretty good turnout for this first-time event, with several new young lifters. In the raw bench press competition Walt Wicker broke the existing Arkansas state record for the novice 148 class with 245. Mark Staib won at 181 with 280. In the teenage 13-15 age group it was Will Craft setting the state record at 220 with a strong 285. Adam Reagan, who had near-perfect form in the bench, broke the state record at junior 198 with 340. Tim Brigance set the state record at submaster 165 with 275 while Jim Turner equaled his own state record at 65-69/242 with 355. In the assisted bench press event it was Craig Criss at novice 165 for the win with 280. Jeff Criss won at 275 with 450. Both of these novice lifters established new state records for their respective classes. At 16-17 Zachary Brown-Perry got a big 305 personal best at 165. Brad Shearin, just a big strong kid, broke the state record at 16-17/220 with 375! But what we all came to see was the lifting of submaster and open 275 winner Harley Timbs. Harley had grown up in the Jonesboro area and had been waiting for the opportunity to lift in his hometown. And he did put on a show! With his weight down to 259, due to a recent stomach virus, Harley opened with an easy 700. A second attempt with a new Arkansas state record (in both classes) of 750 was successfully locked out to the cheers of the crowd. Not having any 100 lb. plates, the forty-fives were loaded to the end of the bar (which is a distinct disadvantage for the lifter), Harley still came within inches of locking out with 770. If we had had 100 lb. plates the 800 Harley wanted to get on this day would have surely went! Steve Low came down from Missouri to capture the submaster 308 title with a new state record of 465. Jeff West only got in his opener of 405, which was a new state record at 40-44/220, but was good for much more. Charles Taylor won at open 242 with a new personal best 540. Of course, Harley Timbs was awarded the best lifter trophy among the benchers. In the deadlift competition Walt Wicker won his third title of the day at novice 148 with a solid 375. Before that, Walt, who was our only competitor in the curl event, set the record with 115 there. Also pulling in the novice division was 198 winner Marty Rowe, who finished with 475. Brian Gilmore finally got his first official 500 with his win at 308, setting the record there. Our only teenage puller, Derek Leonard, set the state record at 16-17/220 with 430. Steve Low won his second title of the day at submaster 308 with his 455 pull. Best lifter Steve Richardson, won at 40-44/220, finishing with a new state record of 570. In the open division Robert Gilmore got a new pr at 220 with 390. Charles Taylor's second win of the day came with his 575 @ 242. Our final deadlifter was Randy Henfling, who broke the state record at open 308 with a strong 600. Thanks to all those who helped set up and tear down the meet and to all who helped load and spot. A special thanks to Tracie Massey who took some great pictures and to Ashlie and Laynie Brigance who served as our trophy girls. See you all again next year! Dr. Darrell Latch

Thanks to owner Doug Porterfield for hosting this first-time event. In the assisted bench press competition Darrell Huskey broke his own Tennessee state record at wheel chair/220 with a new personal best 295. Denise Timbs, 2008 NPC Ms. Tennessee Bodybuilding Champion, broke her state record at open women/148 with a solid 235. Our only other assisted lifter, Jason Dedmon, tied the existing state record at open 308 with 585, which was a new pr for him as well. In the raw bench press event Angelle Wray dropped down to the 165 class to set the state open record at 195! Brian Moore set the state record at 16-17/220 with 315. In the 18-19 age group Dustin Lynn won at 198 with 275 while Spencer Hobaugh took the 220's with 295. All of these lifts represented new pr's for the boys. Jason Lawson, looking very strong on this day with solid lifting, broke the state record at submaster 275 with 515. Another great lifter, master 50-54 Charles Smith, won at 165 with another state record of 345. In the open division Keith Mackey broke the state record at 275 with the biggest raw lift of the day, 545. Josh Slagle set the state record at 308 with 505. Our biggest attempt of the day came from Casey Reece, who opened with 605 but failed with his first attempt and dropped out of the competition. Casey was just getting over being sick and decided not to push it. It was great having these last three competitors come from the Ashville, North Carolina area, even though the gym owner was concerned about whether or not they were housebroken! The best lifter award for the bench competition went to Jason Dedmon. In the curl competition Angelle Wray established a new Tennessee state record for the open 165 class with 80. Brian Moore got his second state record of the day at 16-17/220 with 190, which turned out to be the biggest curl of the day. At 18-19 it was Dustin Lynn at 198 with 160, while Spencer Hobaugh did the same at 220, to establish a new state record there. Les Cramer set the state record at 65-69/181 with a solid 135. Les Cramer is responsible for bringing all of the fine young lifters to this meet and we all appreciate the time he has spent training them. Our final curler was Charlie Poteete, who set the state record at open/shw with 165. In the deadlift event Angelle Wray won her third title of the day with a great 315 pull at open 165. Josh Davis, who was competing for the first time, pulled 450 @ novice/275. At 16-17/220, once again it was Brian Moore, who broke the state record with an easy 605. 640 would have gone had he not tore his hand as his grip gave way. This kid just turned 17! At 18-19/198 Dustin Lynn got a new state record with a new personal best 550. Spencer Hobaugh won at 220 with 475. Our biggest pull of the day came from open 242 winner, Quentin Davis. Setting the state record there, Quentin also won the best lifter award among the pullers. We did have a two-man event where Quentin Davis and Brian Moore pulled a new Tennessee state record of 1005 @ open/220. Thanks to Doug Porterfield and Brian Moore, Sr. for loading and spotting and to the others who helped and took pictures and to Les Cramer and his wife who helped in so many ways. Thanks also to Aleksa Moore for serving as our trophy girl. See you all again next year.Dr. Darrell Latch
