Thanks to owner Heather Carota for once again hosting this event. In the raw bench division it was first-time competitor Jacqalynn Riley with a new Indiana state record of 90 at junior women 114. Amanda Kirby won at junior 132 with 100. State record-holder in her home state of Kentucky, Elizabeth Rich, broke the state record here at open 198 with 125. Jeff Meyer broke the state record for the novice 165 class with his 255 final attempt. At teenage 13-15 it was Ohio's sensation Brandon Rader with a new state record of 315 at 220. Scott Sharrock won at 16-17/220 with 300, while at 18-19/165 it was Aaron Marcum with a new state record of 265. Also at 18-19 was 181 winner Ryan Roginski with a new state record of 315. Stanley Riley won at junior 275 with a personal best 365. Moving to the master men it was Jeff Molkentin, breaking his own state record at 40-44/198 with 395. Shane Fletcher moved up to the 242 class to capture the state record there with 415. Bob Bean broke the state record at 55-59/220 with 415. For the police & fire 40-44/220 class it was Steve Larson, breaking the state record there with 375. In the open division, Adam Clements won at 165, setting the state record with 260. Justin Baker won at 181 with 275 while Bob Bean captured the title at 220 with 415. Jeff Molkentin was awarded the best lifter trophy for the raw lifters. In the assisted division it was Chad Breeden with his first official 500, breaking the state record at submaster 308. Steve Watts, trying to get used to his new Katana shirt, failed to get in his opener of 500 at 45-49/198. This was the first time Steve had ever bombed out of a meet. Darris Sparks had lost a few pounds in bodyweight, but still was able to brake the state record at 55-59/181 with a strong 390. Wayne Smallwood was another of our bomb-outs, missing his opener of 455 due to a slight elbow injury. Just turned sixty-seven, Wayne has to be one of the greatest master benchers in the world past the age of sixty! Paul Wilder, another great one, won at 65-69/220 with a new state record of 290. Paul Newton looked stronger than ever at police & fire 40-44. Paul, who just keeps moving up in bodyweight, is now in the shw class, where he set the state record with 455. The magical 500 came oh, so close, on his final attempt; maybe just a few more pounds in bodyweight, and you'll have it, Paul! I'm sure Paul's nutritionist, Jason "Sissy-Boy" Leonhardt has the solution! (I noticed Sissy-Boy didn't lift again...rumor has it he's training for a bodybuilding competition!) Taking the open 242 and best lifter award for the assisted lifters was Ricardo Jones, who finished with 510. In the deadlift event Chad Breeden won his second title of the day at submaster 308 with his 455 opener. Steve Larson also made it two for two at police & fire/40-44/220 with a new state record of 455. The biggest pull of the day came from Paul Newton at police & fire/40-44/shw, who with near perfect form finished with another state record of 525. Paul Wilder, who was scheduled to lift at 65-69/220, failed to show up due to back spasms. Thanks to those who helped with the competition and for the support of Darris Sparks of Samson's Gym and Wayne Smallwood of Wayne's Gym, both from Hamilton, Ohio and Chad Breeden and Justin Baker of Bodywork's Gym of Dry Ridge, Kentucky. See you all again next year! Dr. Darrell Latch

Thanks to owner Beth Starker for hosting this event once again. In the raw bench press event it was Kyle McNamara with a new Indiana state record of 135 at special olympic/148. Jodi Alexander is now sixteen and lifting in the teen women's 16-17/148 class. Jodi finished with a new raw state record there of 115. Melissa Hiner won at submaster 165, breaking the state record with 165. Amy Alexander also got a new state record with her 140 final lift at open 198. For the novice men we had some great lifters. First, at 165 it was Adam Clements with a new state record of 265, breaking his training partner's, Jeff Meyers, efforts of the day before at Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Rick Rowe, an amazing lifter at a mere 185 bodyweight, won at 198 with another state record of 420. Jeff Lantz upped the state record at 220 by five pounds to 280 while Bart Kelley, lifting in his first competition, set the record at 308 with 280. Evan Elkins won at 13-15/198 with 185, followed by Jeff Meyer's win at 18-19/165 with 255. Rob Davis won at submaster 165, tying the state record there with 260. At 220 it was Albert Weathers over Lenny Wolz 440 to 405. Lenny had actually broken the state record there with his 405 before Big Al came back with his personal best 440. Ron Hampton won at 40-44/275 with 365 while Greg Ettl captured the gold at 50-54/165, with a new state record of 270. Dorran Vogler broke the state record at 65-69/181 with 250. Dan Kelly won at police & fire/50-54/198 with a new state record of 270 and Bill Mehaffey took the win at police & fire/70-74/220 with 180. In the open division it was Reggie Dukes with 380 @ 165. This kid weighed in at just 157, pressing 380! That's sixty-six pounds over double-bodyweight! Best lifter! At 198 it was Darnell Griffin over Andrew Kocks 420 to 335. Rick Chambers, always a consistant lifter, won at 220 with a personal best 420. For the assisted division at 45-49 it was Kevin Piper with his opener of 360. Having some injury problems, Kevin wisely stopped there. Rocky Tilson gave 600 a go twice, and actually came close with his second attempt. Rocky had never tried that kind of weight before, but with a little more work with his shirt I'm sure he will get that weight and more! Dave Shorter, who had been little under the weather recently, won at 55-59/242 with 235. Ian Robie was our final competitor in the bench. Ian finished with 470 at open 275. In the deadlift event Sam McNew broke the state record at special olympics 148 with a strong 280 pull! Rick Rowe won at novice 198 with 510 while Ariel Andrade set the state record at novice 242 with 500. This was Ariel's first competition. Mike Rincker, a strong young puller, won at 18-19/165 with 475. At submaster 165 Rob Davis won his second title of the day, finishing with 405. Bill Newby set the state record at 40-44/242 with a personal best 550, just missing a final pull of 600. Kevin Piper took the 45-49/242 class with his 405 opener, stoping again due to an injury. Rocky Tilson pulled a strong 555 state record at 45-49/275, also coming close with 600. Chris Riesenmey had a good day, pulling a strong 525 at 50-54/242. In the open division it was Rick Chambers at 220 with 455, just barely beating out Jaff Lantz, who finished with 450. But our big puller of the day was 242 winner Brent Oertel. Brent opened with 500, then went straight to 725, which he smoked! A final with a new state record 750 failed to lockout only due to Brent being slightly out of his groove at the bottom. 800 will be there before too long. Of course, Brent won the best lifter trophy. Thanks to Justin Leary and Luke Collins for doing a great job loading and spotting all day and to Taylor Collins for taking pictures and serving as our trophy girl. See you all in August for the SLP Indiana State Fair Bench Press/Deadlift Championship! Dr. Darrell Latch

Thanks to owner Ken Weber for once again hosting this annual event. In the raw bench press competition it was Tracy Farner winning at master women 40-44/148, tying her own Wisconsin state record with her 105 opener. Two subsequent attempts with 110 failed just off her chest. For the men's junior division it was Mark Thompson at 132 with a new personal best of 260. Nicholas Scmidt won at 165 with 275 while Valentino Harris took the title at 198 with 405. All three of these junior lifters set new state records for their respective classes. At 45-49 it was John Meyerhofer at 198 with 315. This was John's first competition for nearly twenty years! At 242 Dan Breuckman won over Les Krauss at 330 to 320. Tom Mollan, state record-holder at 60-64/220, won there with 320. In the police & fire division, Mike Barajas won again this year, breaking his state record of last year with 335. In the open division Pete Thompson won at 148 with another state record of 240 while Santy Hong tied his own state record at 165 with his final lift of 290. Taking the open 198 raw class was Jon Wixom, who finished with 365. For the assisted division it was Adrian Qutierrez at 18-19/148 with a new state record of 320. Tom Theama got a new personal best at 40-44/275 with 340. David Lemus won at 50-54/198 with 365, breaking the existing state record there. Then at 55-59/220 it was Ray Gronowski with 325. The best lifter award went to Valentino Harris who finished with 405 at a 185 bodyweight. Moving to the deadlift event we had a great new female lifter by the name of Jenny Ebanks. Jenny easily handled her record-breaking 365 final pull at 242. A fourth attempt with 405 should have gone, but slipped out of the groove early-on. Still, in her first competition Jenny set the state record for the novice and open 242 classes! Another new lifter was ten year old Jesse Theama. Jesse finished with a personal best and new state record of 180 for the novice 105 class. Tyler Kerkman won at 16-17/165 with 370 while Anthony Trebiatowski took the title at junior 181 with 450. A fourth with 465 set the state record there. Ramon Martinez continues to show great pulling strength with his easy 570 pull at submaster 242. For the 40-44 age group, Mark Ruplinger won at 181 with 560 while Tom Theama won at 275 with his opener of 450 after a final attempt with a new state record of 520 failed to lock out. Brian Pirlot won at 45-49/220 with 455 while Ken Weber won at 50-54/ 165 with a personal best 425. Stuart Coogan, always a great puller, won at 50-54/220 with 500, making just his opener. Richard Sadowski, another consistent puller, won at 55-59/242 with 510. For the police & fire 40-44/198 class it was John Lathrop with a new state record of 465. Mike Barajas won at police & fire open 198 with 470 while Mike Geiger, nursing a slight upper hamstring pull, finished with 650 for the 275 class. In the open men's division it was best lifter Rich Kokott for the win at 198 with his 635 opener. Two final attempts with 700 were close, but failed just at the knees. For the 220 class Chris Lehman won with 425. Then at 242 Matt Dienberg won over Anthony "Supreme" Gayfield 610 to 525. At 308 it was Randy Spidell with his opener of 515. Thanks to the owner and to the Kentuckiana Power Team for hosting this competition and the work they put into promoting this event. This was a great competition, with great energy that made it seem more like a family reunion than anything else. After a disastrous automobile accident three years ago, fifty-six year old Stephen Matzek returned to competition! Though still in a wheel chair, the totally supportive and enthusiastic crowd cheered at his every attempt. Also on hand was Heath Logsdon, a great wheel chair athlete who is always "charged up" for competition! A multi-state record-holder, Heath is also a vital part of the Omega Force Christian Power Team. A great witness for the sport! We also had two great special olympic lifters, Steven Currey and Sam Chapala. Steven, who is always consistent, broke his own Kentucky state record at 198 with a solid 320 personal record. Sam has lost weight; looks trim and healthy. He benched 300 for the second time ever, but at a fifteen pound less bodyweight! Returning to competition, after a few years off was 50-54/220 raw winner Ray Belanger and open 242 winner Robert Patton. Robert, "The Pilzbury Doughboy" last lifted at 181, but that was three years and a very happy marriage ago. Robert just did make the 242 class! Someone must be a good cook Just kidding, Robert! So, you can see, it was like a family reunion! I really enjoyed this meet, where so many of my old friends (and a few new ones) did so well. Now, isn't that what this sport is all about, the fellowship and the encouragement and support we all get from one another?! In the raw bench press event Heath Logsdon moved up to 132 in the wheel chair division, setting the Kentucky state record there. A new lifter to Son Light Power, Lisa Fedenko, broke the state record at 45-49/181 with a solid 180 fourth attempt. Divine Prince, another newcomer, set the state record at novice 242 with 375, then a great fourth with 390. Then at 18-19/242 it was Marc B |
