Once again we were honored to have Dr. Victor and Mrs. Lourdes Soto present, who were awarded a special trophy, in memory of their son, by Vince's old training partner, Frank Ranelli. Before his death in 2000, at the age of twenty-three, Vince had become one of the premier lifters in the 114 and 123 class. He was a personal trainer and powerlifting coach, serving as our head judge in 2000. Leaving such an impact in the powerlifting community, it is only fitting that we continue to honor the life and spirit of Vince Soto. In the women's raw bench press competition, it was Susan Olds for the win at 40-44/132 with 145. Mae Nar Leedy set a new Ohio state record in the 50-54/97 class with her 70 final attempt. Deb Mitchell, state record-holder at 50-54/165 won there with 155. Our final raw lifter was Christina Schaeffer, who broke the state record at open 123 with 125. For the women's assisted division, teenage wonder Alison Streacker broke her own state record at 13-15/165 with a personal best 210! Candace Pahl got a big 175 with her win at 18-19/148, but Kim Trausch failed to get an opener in at open 165, missing with 245 on her final attempt. Alison was awarded the best lifter trophy among the ladies. Moving to the men's raw division, it was Morgan Ruben for the win at 13-15/198 with 205. Jez Alogla broke the state record at junior 242 with 330. Our biggest raw lift of the day came from 45-49/275 winner Roger Nanns, who finished with a new state record of 520. Aaron Jones finished second behind Roger with 345. Phil Zimmerman returned to competition, after a few years off, taking the 50-54/242 class with a new state record of 405. Also capturing a new state record was 55-59/198 winner, Robbin Smith. Robbin finished with 325. Mike Brown, state record-holder at 60-64/242, broke that record by five pounds with his 360 final attempt. Newcomer William Zody set the state record at 65-69/198 with 150 while Troy Huser did the same at open 220 with a great 450! In the assisted division Matt Brenner won at novice 308 with 380. Mason Hunick and Cody Thomas both finished with 250, both setting new state records for their respective classes in the 13-15 age group, Mason at 148 and Cody at 165. Brad Young got a big 450 at 18-19/165 while E. J. Craycraft hit 285 to finish second. Bobby Yoakam won at junior 181 with 350, making just his opener there. Ron Schoffner broke his own state record at submaster 198 with 480 while Troy Novitski broke the existing record at 308 with a big 565 personal best final attempt! In the master men's division, it was Frank Ranelli for the win at 40-44/148 with 325, just missing a fourth with 350, using Vince's old denim shirt. Frank has worn that same shirt in each of the past eight years for this competition. Also at 40-44 was big Palmo Araci, who broke the state record at 308 with a great personal best 605! Joseph Yu, one of the greatest lightweight master benchers of all time, won at 45-49/148 with his 400 state record. Rick Hamsher, who has lifted in each of these Ohio state fair meets, won again at 45-49/198 with 370. Best lifter in the men's master division went to John Thomas, who finished with a new state record of 560 @ 45-49/220. At 50-54/198 it was Garry Benford with a new state record of 500 over Jeff Chrissis, who finished with 425. Garry is back stronger than ever, after shoulder surgery of last fall. Roy Leedy set a new personal record with his win at 50-54/220 making a strong 435 final attempt. Kurt Hall won at 242 with 450 while Mike Giese, who had also been away for a few years, came back and broke the state record at 308 with 415. Charles Workman won again at 70-74/220 with 285, just missing his final attempt at 305, which would have been a new state record as well! At 198 it was Jim Shambre over Jason Russell 365 to 330, both lifters getting just their openers in. Scott finished with a strong 720 state record at 275, capturing the best heavy lifter award as well. In the deadlift competition Christina Schaeffer won her second title of the day at open 123 with 205. 225 was almost locked out when Christina lost her balance forward. Both were new state records. E. J. Craycraft broke the state record at 18-19/165 with a solid 485 pull. Jez Alogla won again at junior 242 with 550 while Will Quinn finished second there with 485. Best lifter Kirk Bardos made a great comeback at 40-44/198, pulling a new state record of 605! It was Rick Hamsher and a new state record at 45-49/198 of 540! In the open division Jeremiah Stonestreet won at 181 with 500 while Scott Vickery failed with his opener of 675 twice, due to nerve damage in his right arm which caused him to lose his grip, and bowed out of the competition. The team title went to F-i-t-1 from Lexington, Kentucky with members, Mae and Roy Leedy, Jim Shambre, Matt Brenner, Robbin Smith, Bill Zody and Deb Mitchell. Thanks to the great job of loading and spotting by my son Joey Latch and his friend Adam Fancher. See you all agin next year! Dr. Darrell Latch

Held August 9, 2008 at the Expo Center on the fairgrounds we had the largest turnout ever at a state fair event, 125 entries! And in spite of a time limit the event actually only lasted six hours! Thanks to my son Joey Latch and his loading partner Adam Fancher, that equaled out to less than a minute per attempt! No miss-loads and the bar never touched anyone's chest for the eighty-two lifters in the bench! Joey, who has been loading and spotting at an average of 60-70 meets a year since he was eleven, is by far the best in the sport. About to turn twenty-one, Joey, without a doubt has loaded and spotted in more powerlifting competitions than any other teenager ever! I challenge anyone to try and keep up with his pace! Okay, enough of that, let's move to the bench press event, beginning with the raw women's classes. For the novice division it was Trish Martin for the win at 132 with 135. We had a good turnout with some great lifting as well. Many thanks to Marketing Director Tammie Nichols for providing a great air-conditioned facility for this event. Starting with the raw bench press division first-time competitor Danielle McDowell won at teenage 16-17/148, establishing a new Missouri state record there with 115. Her mother, Christina McDowell, also set a new state record for her class, submaster 148, finishing with 135. For the novice men's division it was Case Griever and the win at 181 with 330 while Brian Gilmore took the 308 class with a personal best 220. Both were new state records. At 13-15 it was Chuck Fitzgerald with 115 in the 148 class while brother Scott Fitzgerald finished with 280 @ 275, both of which were new state records as well. Our third competitor at 13-15 was 165 winner Jacab Elliott, who finished there with 165. Eric Wright won at 16-17/198, establishing a new state record there with his second attempt of 325. In the 18-19 age group Christos Tsiaklides won at 198 with 270 while Josh Berkel took the title at 220 with 205. Both were new state records for their respective classes. Rick White got his state record at submaster 165 with a great 350 after his final attempt with 375 was turned down due to raised hips. But this still allowed Rick to capture the best lifter title for the raw lifters. At 181 it was Darrell Barfield with a new state record of 300. Another newcomer, Gary McCloud, showed plenty of potential with his win at 40-44/220 and new state record of 365. Terry Carlisle continues to be consistent at 45-49/181, finishing here with 260. Also at 45-49 was 198 winner Matt Muccigrosso with his state record 315 final attempt. Our final raw lifter was the amazing fifty-seven year old wonder, Ken Russell. Built like a twenty-five year old bodybuilder, Ken smoked each of his attempts, finishing with a new state record of 350 @ 55-59/220! Moving to the assisted division, at novice 165 was Cody Boicourt with a new state record of 345. Justin Deely also got a new state record at 198 with his 315 final attempt. Also establishing new state records for the novice division was 242 champion Charles Taylor, Jr. with 460 and shw winner Dennis Reed who finished with 465. At submaster it was Jim Kooken with 350 @ 181, making all three of his lifts cleanly. Mark Austin only got in his opener of 500 @ 275, after missing his final two attempts with 540 and 570. Then at 308 Stephen Low won with a strong 465. Rich McDowell looked strong at 40-44/275, finishing there with a new state record of 600. Bruce Stevens, who at a 210 bodyweight, is looking for a triple- bodyweight bench, settled with a 550 state record, after missing with a personal best attempt of 605. Gene Bauer finally made it to the 50-54 age group, taking the title there with another new state record of 455. Training partner Floyd Ouderkirk won at 55-59/198 with a new state record and personal best 350. At 60-64/220 it was ageless wonder Mike Anderson with a great 425! In the open division Adam Beanland set a new state record with his opening attempt of 435 @ 181. 465 failed to lockout properly on his next two attempts, even though he has done more in the gym. Chris Flick won at 220 with 425, making each of his attempts. At 242 we had some competition. In third place it was Bobby Boothe with his opener of 475, but who came close with his 540 final attempt. Second place went to Nathan Gentges, one of the great young lifters from Missouri, who only got in his opener of 600, though 650 was close. The title at 242 once again went to Keith Parrish who finished with 655. Also taking the best lifter title, Keith holds the state mark there with 680. Kevin Flick got his first official 500 bench at 275, finishing there with 515. Our final open lifter was 308 winner Kevin Ballenger, who finished with 450. In the deadlift event newcomer Amy Piatt set the state record at novice 165 with 195. Lots of potential here. Charles Taylor, Jr. won again at novice 242 with another state record of 510 while Brian Gilmore won his second title of the day at 308 with a personal best 460. At 13-15 it was Chuck Fitzgerald at 148 with 245 while brother Scott took the 275 class with 445. Josh Berkel won again at 18-19/220 with 300 along with Stephen Low, who took his second title at submaster 308. Steve finished there with a new state record of 520. Matt Muccigrosso pulled his first ever 500 with his win at 45-49/198, establishing a new state record there as well. Next up was the premier puller at 165, Ryan Snelling. Ryan, who had just graced the July cover of Powerlifting USA, pulled a great personal best and Missouri state record of 650 at a 162 bodyweight! Wow! Our final puller was open 198 lifter Christos Tsiaklides, who finished with 400. Thanks to my son Joey and his friend Adam Fancher for once again doing a great job spotting and loading and to our trophy girl Taylor Piatt for helping with the awards. See you all again next year! At first, the sound of where we were holding the competition was kind of scary, but it turned out to be a great place with indoor bathrooms and an air system that made the event quite comfortable for the lifters and spectators. Thanks to the Special Events people and especially our host, Kara for providing everything we needed. In the bench press event we start with the raw women. Our first competitor was also our best lifter, Anna Tabit. Anna has shown great improvement in her form, as evident in her 155 pr state record bench at submaster 165. Mark Maidens got a second state record and second win for the day at police & fire submaster 220 with his 435 final pull. Bill Stech pulled a stong 605 state record at police & fire/submaster 275 as well. In the open division Sam Germann and Shane Smith won at 148 and 220 respectively, but it was Scott Reynolds for the win at 198 and the best lifter award to take it all. Thanks to Joey Latch and Adam Fancher for another great job of loading and spotting and to Joey's fiance, Karisa Fonner for helping at the table. See you all again next year. Dr. Darrell Latch

Marc Barnett set the Kentucky state record at 18-19/220 with his 310 fourth attempt. Zac Meihaus won at junior 165 with a new state record of 285. At submaster 242 it was Matt Cave, back from a serious automobile accident a year ago, tying the state there with 405. Glad to see Matt back strong again. Stephen Matzak, who has lost one hundred and thirty seven pounds of bodyweight in the past year, continues to get healthier and stronger, winning here at 55-59/shw with 335. Great to see Steve doing so well. In the open division best lifter Josh Abbott won at 181 with a great 375 state record. Steve Stepp took the 242 class with 405. Moving to the assisted division it was Sam Chapala for the special olympic/181 class with 280. Sam was featured in the July issue of Powerlifting USA. Chad Troutt got his first ever 500 bench with his fourth attempt at submaster 275. Chris Flowers won at 40-44/148, making just his opener of 340, but coming very close with his final attempt of 390. In the open division our best lifter was Matt Enix, who garnered a personal best 570 @ 275. John Phillips rounded out the benching field with 420 for the 308 win.
